Gerry Wolf visits Lead-Acid Battery Department of IEES

In late February, Mr. Gerry Wolf, Editor and Publisher of “Batteries and Energy Storage Technology” magazine, visited our Department and the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems. During his visit he interviewed Prof. Pavlov and discussed with him the state-of-art and the future of lead-acid battery science, technology and market. He met the research staff of our Department and presented a lecture entitled “The Battery Business”, sharing his personal view on the current problems and future challenges facing battery manufacturer worldwide. You can read about Mr. Woolf’s impressions of the Lead-Acid Battery Department and the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems in his article entitled “Rolling back prices…and battery problems” published in the April issue (№16) of BEST magazine, page 49-57.

Lecture course presented by Prof. D. Pavlov in Turkey

Prof. D. Pavlov presented a course of lectures on the processes that take place during the technological process of lead-acid batteries manufacture to the technical staff of INCI Aku. The course was held at INCI Aku, Manisa, Turkey in mid-May 2007.

Prof. D. Pavlov visits battery companies and presents lectures in USA

At the beginning of June 2007, Prof. Pavlov visited lead-acid battery companies in the USA. He paid a visit to C&D Technologies in Blue Bell, Philadelphia, where he presented lectures on the technology of lead-acid battery production and the processes that occur during the different manufacturing stages. After that he met with the technical staff of GNB/Exide Technologies at their facilities in Aurora, Illinois.  He discussed some technical problems with the engineering staff. At end of his stay in the USA, Prof. Pavlov visited the head office of FireFly Energy Inc. in Peoria, Illinois and discussed with our colleagues from FireFly team technical problems and issues of mutual interest.

Managing Director of Bitrode Limited, UK visits LABD

Mr. Kevin Campbell, Managing Director of Bitrode Limited, United Kingdom, visited our Department at the end of June 2007. He inspected our battery and cell testing laboratories outfitted with Bitrode equipment. LABD researchers and engineers discussed with him the prospective upgrade of our equipment with new and more sophisticated modules.

Prof. Pavlov visits companies in India

In December 2006, after his participation at ISAEST-8, Goa India, Prof. D. Pavlov visited several leading lead-acid battery companies in India and had meetings with colleagues from Indian research institutes. He was once again a guest to CECRI, Karaikudi.  Prof. Pavlov was invited to deliver his course of lectures “Technology of Lead-Acid Battery Manufacture” at Amara Raja Batteries Ltd.,     in Karakambadi. Next, Prof. Pavlov had discussions on lead-acid battery technology with the staff of HBL NIFE Power systems Ltd. and NED Energy Ltd., in Hyderabad.

Prof. Pavlov as a reviewer of PhD thesis

In October 2006, Prof. D. Pavlov was an invited member of the jury and presented a review report on PhD thesis “Dévelopment de méthodes d’eavluation de l’état de charge et de l’état de santé des batteries utilisées dans les systeèmes photovoltaïques’’ by M. Arnaud Delaille from Université Pierre et Marie Curie – Paris VI, France. LABD team congratulates Dr. Delaille on the excellent defense of his work and wishes him lots of success in his future research into of lead-acid battery science.
Prof. Pavlov took advantage of his visit to France to exchange ideas and have discussions on some recent research issues with our colleagues from INES RDI, Le Bourget du Lac.

Looking forward to cooperation with TUBITAK-MAM Energy Institute, Turkey

By invitation of TUBITAK-MAM Energy Institute, Turkey Prof. Pavlov prepared a special lecture course “Fundamentals of Lead-Acid Battery Technology”. He presented this course to scientists from the Vehicle technologies department in August 2006.
Prof. Pavlov also met executives, scientists and engineers from Turkish lead-acid battery manufacturing companies to discuss some of their technological problems.

International exchange of experience at LABD

In August 2006 two young scientists, Mrs. Nadia Chahmana and Ms. Malika Foudia, from the Chemical Engineering Department of University of Setif, Algeria were on a training course in LABD. The two ladies had the chance to observe and perform themselves some of the lead-acid battery tests and analyses. For a period of three weeks they worked together with researchers from our department, studied publications of our team and exchanged ideas on organization of the scientific work. Their visit also provided an excellent opportunity for friendly exchange of cultural habits and traditions between nationals of two different countries.

Lecture course presented by Dr. G. Papazov in Brasil

A course of lectures on the processes that take place during lead-acid battery operation in load-leveling system application was presented by Dr. Geno Papazov to specialists from NIFE, Brasil and from PREPA, Puerto Rico. The course was held at NIFE, Sao Paolo, Brasil in August 2006.

Seminar in China

In June 2006 Dr. Geno Papazov presented a course of lectures on lead-acid battery production technology within a seminar organized by Jin Fengfan Storage Battery Ltd., Baoding, China. About 60 scientists and engineers from 30 companies attended the seminar.

Prof. Pavlov was awarded
the highest honor of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
Congratulations!

On May 17, 2006, on the annual joint meeting of the General Assembly and the Society of academicians and member-correspondents of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences the President of BAS Prof. I. Juchnovski honoured Prof. Detchko Pavlov with the highest distinction of the Academy “Marin Drinov medal with ribbon” for his outstanding scientific achievements and on the occasion of his 75th anniversary which he celebrated last year.
