The 9th International Conference on Lead-Acid Batteries LABAT’2014 was held June 10-13 at the Flamingo Grand Hotel, Albena Resort, Bulgaria.

The organizer, the team of the Lead-Acid Batteries Department of IEES-BAS, expresses sincere gratitude to all LABAT'2014 delegates who joined our team and made the Conference a very successful scientific event.
320 delegates representing 41 countries from 6 continents got together to this informative and interesting meeting.

Once again LABAT’2014 attracted scientists from academic institutions and representatives of research, technical, manufacturing, marketing and sales divisions from lead-acid battery industry to present last achievements and discuss new ideas at a high expert level.
To sing spirit lifting songs before important events is in the style of the old Bulgarian tradition. Following this tradition, the brilliant performance of three Bulgarian tenors during the opening ceremony of LABAT’2014 inspired the delegates for enthusiastic and productive work during the subsequent four conference days.

67 technical papers were presented sorted thematically under the following main topics of sessions:

  • Lead-Carbon Electrodes
  • Lead-Acid Battery Technology
  • Lead-Acid Battery Operation
  • Pb/PbO2/PbSO4 Electrodes
  • Lead-Acid Battery Modelling
  • Lead-Acid Battery Recycling

38 world leading companies displayed their new technologies, products and services at the exhibition held during the conference days. They contributed greatly to the success of LABAT’2014 adding to it the feature of good place for business networking.

At a special ceremony, Prof. Nikolay Miloshev, Vice-President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, presented the Gaston Planté Medal to the 2014 recipients of the award – Dr. Boris Monahov and Dr. Eberhard Meissner. This prestigious award is bestowed to scientists and technologists in recognition of their significant contribution to the development of lead-acid batteries.
The International Gaston Planté Medal Committee elected, by secret vote, the above two scientists who had ranked highest with equal number of votes, out of 27 prominent lead-acid battery experts proposed by the members of the International Advisory Committee for nomination. Two more scientists were nominated for the award - Dr. Jun Furukawa and Dr. Geno Papazov, but Dr. Monahov and Dr. Meissner won the harsh competition.

During LABAT’2014 several social events were organized to assure productive networking atmosphere. The General Sponsor of LABAT’2014 MONBAT Plc. hosted a Get-together Cocktail Party where delegates catched up with old acquaintances and met new professional colleagues on the eve of the Conference. The LABAT’2014 delegates spent very enjoyable time at the Gala Banquet in the Bulgarian Fiesta Restaurant watching a spectacular folklore program including an amazing fire dancing show.
